This is one of William Shakespeare’s last plays written alone. The story starts on a ship and moves to a remote island where we meet Prospera the magician, her daughter Miranda and their two servants Ariel (airy spirit) and Caliban (lowly ogre) who are polar opposites of the cool kid spectrum. While not listed among the Bard’s comedies, it has all the elements: comedy, romance, magic, family, betrayal and revenge.
Considered to be the most poetic and magical of his comedies, The Tempest may have been Shakespeare’s final play. Some believe that Prospera’s final speeches signify Shakespeare’s personal farewell to theater from the stage. Hailed as a stunning climax to the career of England’s favorite dramatist, The Tempest is a play praising the glories of reconciliation and forgiveness.
